Ambition and Disappointment
He was 20 years old when he returned to Aix, determined to marry a rich heiress.
His overriding desire was to live fully, to make up for lost time! His plans crumbled one by one, beginning with the unexpected death of the wealthy young woman. Eugene, now 25 years old, was forced to make new plans for his life. He realised that he was not the extraordinary man he had imagined. Certainly he had some good qualities, a strong character and a generous heart. It was also obvious that he had yet to accomplish anything really important.
The social and moral chaos of the post-revolution years had a profound impact on Eugene. He was moved by the weakened condition of the Church, the loss of faith and the plight of the poor. A proud and energetic young man full of good intentions, he began to help the poor of Aix and visit prisoners.
